On Monday morning, a group from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a raid at the residence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan. The raid is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering activities connected to Khan’s tenure as the chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board.

Khan, who represents the Okhla constituency in the Delhi Assembly, is accused of illegal recruitment and financial misconduct while serving as the head of the Waqf Board. The ED alleges that Khan was involved in illegally recruiting staff and leasing out properties under the Waqf Board between 2018 and 2022, leading to substantial financial gains through illicit means.

Khan’s Reaction and AAP’s Response

Khan took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) shortly after the ED team arrived at his home, claiming that the authorities had come to arrest him. In his post, he accused the central government of using the ED as a tool to harass him and other AAP leaders. He referred to the government as a “tyranny” and questioned whether it was a crime to serve the public honestly.

Khan also posted a video, reiterating his claims that the government was unfairly targeting him. The video showed heavy security around his residence, with Delhi Police and paramilitary forces stationed outside. The officers were seen examining documents and other materials inside the residence.

Several AAP leaders quickly came to Khan’s defense, condemning the ED’s actions. AAP MP Sanjay Singh accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the raid as part of a political vendetta. Singh pointed out that Khan had already cooperated with the ED’s investigation and had even requested additional time to comply with their demands. He highlighted that Khan’s mother-in-law is battling cancer, yet the authorities chose to raid his home early in the morning.

Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who recently secured bail in a separate case involving the Delhi liquor policy, also criticized the raid. Sisodia accused the BJP of using the ED to suppress opposition voices and intimidate those who refuse to bow down to the ruling party’s pressure.

Allegations and Ongoing Investigation

The ED’s case against Khan is centered on allegations that he amassed significant “proceeds of crime” through illegal activities related to the Delhi Waqf Board. The agency claims that Khan invested these proceeds in acquiring immovable assets under the names of his associates.

Khan has already been questioned by the ED for over 12 hours in connection with the case. Despite his efforts to seek legal protection, both the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court have refused to grant him anticipatory bail, citing his repeated evasion of investigative summons.

The AAP has strongly condemned the raid, labeling it as a politically motivated move to target its leaders. The party insists that the allegations against Khan are baseless and that the ED’s actions are part of a broader strategy by the BJP to weaken its opponents.
