In a historic event, Ecuador’s presidential race culminated in a surprising victory for businessman Daniel Noboa on Sunday, making him the youngest president ever to lead the nation. His resounding victory has been met with hopes of restoring peace in a country grappling with a declining economy, mounting crime, and violence.
Noboa, aged thirty-five, was a surprising qualifier for the run-off at the initial stage of the election. He has promised to develop the economy, create jobs for young citizens, and exile treacherous criminals on prison ships.
During a talk with supporters in the seaside town of Olon, Noboa told them, “Tomorrow we start work for this new Ecuador, we start working to rebuild a country seriously battered by violence, corruption, and hate.”
He further said, “From tomorrow, Daniel Noboa starts work as your new president.” However, he will have to face the notable challenge of setting the economy straight. It has been grappling since the Covid-19 pandemic and has prompted thousands of Ecuadoreans to settle elsewhere. The crime rate has also significantly risen, including the increasing number of murders, robberies, and prison riots.
The previous government placed the blame for this on drug gangs, and the violence culminated during the campaign with the murder of Fernando Villavicencio, an anti-corruption nominee. He was shot while exiting a Quito campaign event in August.
Noboa remains optimistic about Ecuador’s prospects, expressing his belief that the nation has the potential to serve as a global model for progress. Despite the challenges ahead, he is set to govern for a truncated term of 17 months, from December 2023 to May 2025.
