In the ongoing Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance has taken a decisive early lead over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The alliance is currently leading in 46 seats, while the BJP is trailing with 25 seats. These figures highlight a significant shift away from the BJP, which has been trying to strengthen its foothold in the region post-abrogation of Article 370. The Congress-NC alliance appears to be benefiting from local support and political dynamics in Kashmir, where issues such as autonomy and regional identity continue to dominate.
Omar Abdullah, vice president of the National Conference and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, is leading in both Budgam and Ganderbal constituencies in Central Kashmir, signaling his strong presence in the valley. This early trend aligns with the exit polls, which predicted a victory for the Congress-NC alliance. However, it remains important to note that these are early results, and final outcomes could change as the vote counting progresses.
In Haryana, the election results are proving to be more competitive than anticipated. Despite exit polls predicting a clear win for the Congress, the BJP is currently leading in 45 seats, while the Congress is close behind with 38 seats. This neck-and-neck race has made the state a battleground, where both parties are vying for control.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini is leading in his Ladwa seat in Kurukshetra district, reinforcing the BJP’s hold in key areas. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister, is ahead in the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi constituency in Rohtak district, showcasing the Congress’s continued influence in traditional strongholds. Anil Vij, another key BJP leader, is leading from the Ambala Cantt seat, reflecting the BJP’s mixed performance across urban and rural districts.
The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), once a major player in Haryana politics, is leading in only three seats, indicating its decline. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which was expected to challenge the traditional parties, is currently not leading in any seat. In a surprising development, Aditya Surjewala, son of Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, is leading from the Kaithal seat. This could mark the emergence of a new generation of leadership within the Congress.
While the Congress-NC alliance is positioned well in Jammu and Kashmir, the race in Haryana remains tight, with the BJP showing resilience against the Congress. As these are early trends, the final results could still shift. The coming hours will be crucial in determining the future political landscape of both regions.
