Photographs and documents taken from Al Jazeera journalist Mohamed Washah’s laptop during an operation in central Gaza a few weeks ago have been used by the Israeli Army to assert that he is also a prominent Hamas commander.

A Palestinian journalist for Al Jazeera has been accused by the Israeli Army of being a top leader in Hamas’s military arm based on photos and documents that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) found in the Gaza Strip.

The IDF’s Arabic-speaking spokeswoman, Lieutenant Colonel Avichay Adrae, stated that the evidence was taken from a laptop that belonged to Mohamed Washah, who has allegedly been featured in recent Al Jazeera programs.

According to Adraee, evidence from Washah’s laptop was found during an IDF operation within a Hamas camp in the northern Gaza Strip a few weeks ago. Evidence, according to Israel, showed that Washah was a “prominent commander” in Hamas’s anti-tank missile section. He started working in research and development for the terror group’s air unit in late 2022.

Images found on the computer during the intelligence probe link Muhammad Washah to Hamas-related operations. “Who knows how much information we will soon be able to share regarding the existence of other terrorists disguising themselves as journalists,” Adraee tweeted.

On X, the IDF mocked Al Jazeera, the state-run television news network in Qatar.

“Hey Al Jazeera, we thought your journalists were supposed to give unbiased reports on situations, not actively participate in creating them on the front lines as Hamas terrorists,” the Israel Defence Forces posted on Twitter.

The IDF subsequently claimed that two Al Jazeera journalists killed in an Israeli bombing in Rafah, Gaza, last month were affiliated with the militant organizations Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
