An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 struck Southern California as Hurricane Hilary approached, with its epicenter being Ojai, near Santa Barbara and Ventura on Sunday, leaving people questioning what a ‘hurriquake’ is, as social media erupts after the earthquake hits during Hurricane Hilary.

According to USGS data, the earthquake occurred near the Sisar fault. Based on the Ventura County Sheriff’s social media post, there had been no immediate indications of destruction. A statement provided by Joe Biden:

“As soon as Tropical Storm Hilary’s directions were clear, my management initiated swift measures to prepare,” stated Joe Biden. FEMA moved government troops and supplies to California at my instruction so that they could be pushed to devastated towns. The United States Coast Guard had planes ready to respond quickly and conduct search-and-rescue operations. My administration has also sent federal employees to Nevada to provide extra assistance, and we will continue to communicate with California, Nevada, and Arizona about any assistance they may require.”

“This afternoon, I spoke with California Governor Gavin Newsom about the evacuation plans and the initial response to Tropical Storm Hilary,” he stated. I’m still getting updates on our safety measures and the storm’s possible effects, which include flooding. My administration is prepared to provide more support if needed. I strongly advise everyone to consider the current situation seriously while paying heed to local and state officials.” Joe further stated that the earthquake in southern California has been constantly tracked.

In the meantime, the National Weather Service reports that numerous daily precipitation records have been surpassed in Los Angeles. Long Beach Airport (1.56 inches), Hollywood Burbank Airport (1.61 inches), Palmdale Airport (2.95 inches), Sandberg (1.52 inches), Oxnard (.77 inches), and Santa Barbara Airport (1.56 inches) are among these. As a result of Hurricane Hilary, river levels in California have also risen.
