Driver Under the Influence Hits Multiple Vehicles, Killing One and Injuring Four in Pune

Around 10:15 p.m. on Friday, a speeding Volkswagen hit multiple vehicles near Z bridge in Pune, which connects Jungli Maharaj Road to Sadashiv Peth, killing a 60-year-old and injuring four. The deceased 60-year-old biker has been identified as Vishwanath Ramachandra Rajopadhyay of Jaldhara Society in Narayan Peth.

The police claim that a speeding Volkswagen, with Umesh Hanumant Waghmare behind the wheel and his companion Natraj Baburao Suryavanshi, was traveling from Narayan Peth to Alka Chowk when it lost control and struck three cars, including an autorickshaw and two motorcycles.

“The accused and his co-passengers are currently under custody as they were recklessly driving under the influence of alcohol,” said sub-inspector Priyanka Nikam of Vishrambaug Police Station.

The FIR was registered following the accident at Vishrambaug Police Station. In his complaint, Ganesh Nakati, a 48-year-old autorickshaw driver from Kothrud, claimed that the car hit his autorickshaw, two bikes, and a pedestrian before hitting an electrical pole while he was commuting with his three passengers.

Umesh Hanumant Waghmare, a resident of the Kudale Patil Complex in Manikbag on Sinhagad Road, who runs a consulting firm, along with his friend, is booked for reckless driving and causing death by negligence under Sections 279, 304(a), 337, 338, and 427 of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
