The Congress has announced a nationwide protest on Thursday, demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his remarks on B.R. Ambedkar. Shah’s controversial statements, made on Tuesday in the Rajya Sabha during the Parliament Winter Session, have sparked a major political row. According to news agency ANI, the protests will be organized by Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs) at state and district headquarters across the country.
Shah’s comments have triggered a heated political clash with the Congress-led opposition, including parties like the TMC, DMK, RJD, Left, and Shiv Sena (UBT), uniting to criticize the BJP-led central government. This collective backlash resulted in the adjournment of both Houses of Parliament on Wednesday, prompting the BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to step in to defend Shah.
The controversy stems from Shah’s remark in the Rajya Sabha, where he criticized Congress leaders, suggesting they would have secured a place in heaven if they had invoked God’s name as often as they invoke Ambedkar’s. Shah said, “It has become fashionable to say Ambedkar repeatedly. If they had taken God’s name that many times, they would have earned a place in heaven for seven lifetimes.”
