MEERUT: A 40-year-old man succumbed to his injuries at Meerut Medical College Hospital 18 days after being brutally attacked with bricks and sticks by four men over ₹200 on January 9. Meanwhile, his 70-year-old ailing father passed away from grief on January 20 upon learning of his son’s critical condition.
The incident took place in Jai Bheem Nagar under Bhawanpur police station in Meerut district. Police have arrested two of the four accused.
The victim, Hoshiyar Singh Valmiki, was a daily wage labourer. His brother, Amit Valmiki, stated that Hoshiyar had borrowed ₹500 from their neighbor, Vikas Kumar, and had already repaid ₹300.
“Vikas and his associates lured my brother out of the house and assaulted him in a vacant plot for not returning the remaining ₹200. He sustained severe head and abdominal injuries and passed away on Monday. Our father, who was already unwell, died of grief on January 20. My mother is inconsolable,” said Amit.
An FIR has been registered under BNS Section 105 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Section 351 (2) (3) (criminal intimidation) against the four accused. Police have arrested Vikas Kumar (24) and Lala (23), both labourers, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining two suspects. All individuals involved, including the accused and the deceased, belong to the Dalit community, said CO Navina Shukla.
Locals alleged that police delayed filing the FIR, registering it only 10 days after Hoshiyar was attacked.
