In a surprising turn of events, former President Donald Trump has announced that he will not be participating in the upcoming Republican Presidential debates. The decision was revealed in a statement released on Sunday, where Trump cited a recent survey showing him with a substantial lead over other candidates as a primary reason for his absence.

Days before the first Presidential debate in Milwaukee, Trump made a significant announcement, putting an end to weeks of speculation about his participation. This move indicates his focus on a potential showdown with President Joe Biden in the general election.

Highlighting a recent CBS News survey showing Trump leading a pack that he described as having “Legendary” numbers, he took the opportunity to criticize one of his opponents, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, for lagging behind in the polls. He also showcased his accomplishments during his presidential term. In a statement, he also declared that he would “therefore not be participating in the debates.”

Notably, Trump didn’t declare his plans for the time of the debate, which is scheduled for around 9 p.m. on August 23rd. Some speculations have also been made that he might engage in an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, potentially overlapping with the debate, although no official plans have been confirmed as of Friday.

An interview with Carlson, who left the news company earlier this year, would be seen as an insult to the network hosting the debate on Wednesday. Trump has been critical of the network’s coverage of his campaign in recent days.

Trump has chosen to skip several events in early-voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire, which are typically considered crucial for courting party activists and ensuring candidates receive equal attention. Notably, he wasn’t extended an invitation to an event in Atlanta over the weekend, hosted by radio host Erick Erickson, which saw the participation of six other candidates, including DeSantis.

While Trump will not be present at the debate on Wednesday, he wants his supporters to be there in his stead. Representative Byron Donalds revealed in an interview that his staff aggressively urged numerous high-profile supporters to attend the event on his behalf.

Trump’s decision to skip the Presidential debates puts further pressure on his Republican opponents to change their campaign methods. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, specifically, had made Trump a primary centerpiece of his Presidential campaign and had anxiously awaited a debate with him.

As it became clear that Trump would not participate, Christie voiced his irritation by calling Trump a “coward” in statements to the media in Atlanta on Saturday. He wondered if Trump obligated the public to appear in the debate and enable them to compare him to the other contenders.

Trump has stated his opposition to sharing the stage with candidates with single-digit polling ratings; he has also stated that he will not sign a promise from the RNC that is required to participate in the debates. This “Beat Biden” promise asks candidates to guarantee their support for the Republican nominee and to commit to avoiding running as a third-party candidate.
