Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar made a tongue-in-cheek remark about seizing opportunities. This sparked fresh speculation about the power dynamics within the state’s ruling Congress party. Shivakumar’s comment comes amid an ongoing power struggle with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Siddaramaiah has firmly asserted that he will complete his full term as CM.
Speaking at the Kempegowda Jayanti celebrations hosted by the Bangalore Advocates’ Association, Shivakumar said, “I see many lawyers here who are not sitting despite the availability of vacant chairs, while we are all scrambling to find one. Getting a chair is not easy. When you get the opportunity, you must sit and not let go of the chance.” This remark has been widely interpreted as a veiled reference to the ongoing power struggle between Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah.
Background of the Power Struggle
The power tussle between Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah stems from an alleged agreement that Siddaramaiah would serve as CM for the first two-and-a-half years, after which Shivakumar would take over. However, Siddaramaiah has now firmly asserted that he will complete his full term, dismissing speculation about a leadership change.
Siddaramaiah’s Response
Siddaramaiah, who recently returned from Delhi, stated that he has the full support of the Congress high command and wouldn’t have continued as CM without their backing. “The question of leadership is not with the high command. It (Shivakumar’s challenge) has been resolved. I am getting the full support of the Congress high command… I wouldn’t have continued if they had not supported me,” he told NDTV.
Shivakumar’s Stance
Shivakumar, on the other hand, chose not to comment directly on Siddaramaiah’s remarks. “The Chief Minister has already communicated what the high command has said. He has answered all your questions. After that, it’s not right for me to keep making statements or for you to keep asking them,” he said, maintaining party discipline while fueling speculation about his future aspirations.
The ongoing power struggle between Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah has raised concerns about the stability of the Karnataka government and the party’s long-term prospects. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Congress high command will address the issue and what implications it will have for the party’s future in Karnataka.
