Disney is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a new original short film, “Once Upon a Studio.” The film features 543 characters from over 85 Disney films and short films. ABC premiered Disney’s 100th-anniversary celebration and the historic short film on October 15 at 8 p.m. ET.

An eight-and-a-half-minute homage to Disney’s legendary heritage, “Once Upon a Studio” features a bewitching assortment of characters from the classic to the modern. With a smooth transition between the old and the new, the movie takes audiences on a fun trip through the history of Disney’s famous animation. It is an ode to nostalgia and evidence of the timeless allure of Disney’s classic characters.

It is an “all-star ensemble” of popular Walt Disney Animation Studios characters that come together for a “joyful, entertaining, and emotional reunion” as “they assemble for a spectacular group photo to mark Disney’s 100th anniversary.”

During a recent Q&A session, the creators of this historic animated short film, namely writer and director Dan Abraham, writer and director Trent Correy, producer Yvett Merino, and producer Brad Simonsen, shared how Disney’s storytelling is driven by passion and dedication. The discussion shed light on the behind-the-scenes process of bringing together many beloved Disney characters.

The filmmakers’ discussion of their emotional journey while creating the short video was one of the most noteworthy parts of the Q&A. They were moved to tears multiple times during the development process, whether it was when Richard Sherman recorded “Feed the Birds” on the piano that Walt Disney once used to play for him or when they rediscovered their favorite characters in the early animation scenes.

“When I initially heard the pitch for ‘Once Upon a Studio,’ I couldn’t contain my emotions and left the frame during the Zoom call,” said Disney’s Chief Creative Officer, Jennifer Lee during the discussion.

Enthusiastic Disney fans have been expressing their delight on social media, with many sharing their comments. “It’s a short film that made me cry,” an admirer remarked. “You’ve been in my life for fifty years—since I was born. I said, ‘Donald Duck.’ I’m grateful to Disney for the magic and dreams you’ve created, as well as for the adventures you’ve given my family.”

Another Disney lover commented, “It’s so nostalgic! It reminds me of my early years! The diamonds were those! Cartoons nowadays lack substance and are very technologically advanced. Mickey Mouse truly is a legend.” Another social media user added, “Now this was something I’d wish to see Disney do more,” to the plethora of poignant remarks already posted. This kind of heartfelt Mickey Mouse movie would have been among their best works in years starring the character.
