Tata group airline moves a step closer to merger, as aviation regulator DGCA gave its acceptance for merging Vistara into Air India or erstwhile AirAsia India into AI Express. Vistara, which is a joint venture between the Tata Group (51%) and Singapore Airlines (49%), is being integrated into Air India to form a single full-service carrier. The Tata Group aims to quickly merge its aviation sector. As part of the restructuring plan, Air India Express and AirAsia India were amalgamated to become a no-frills airline.
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said, “This is an important milestone in the merger of Tata Group airlines and we are grateful for the support received from the Ministry of Civil Aviation in terms of timely clearance for the merger process.” Wilson said DGCA has guided their teams with a safety-first change management approach, aligning with the safety-first priorities of the Tata Group, as published in Times of India.
As part of the restructuring plan, Air India Express and AIX Connect have been merged to create a no-frills airline, while the combined entity of Air India and Vistara will be the full-service carrier. The Group is pushing to complete the merger by the end of this year. However, Wilson has stated that customer-facing elements, including Vistara’s brand identity, will remain unchanged till 2025.
The Tata Group aims to quickly merge its aviation sector, which lost Rs 15,532 crore in FY23. As part of the restructuring plan, Air India Express and AirAsia India were amalgamated to become a no-frills airline, while the combined entity of Air India and Vistara will compete in the full-service category.
