The precarious situation of 40 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi has left families in agonizing anticipation, praying for the safe return of their loved ones. Among them is Chaudhary Lal, whose younger son, Manjeet Lal, finds himself trapped within the depths of the tunnel, while memories of the elder son’s tragic demise linger.

Chaudhary, whose elder son was lost to an electrocution accident at a Mumbai construction site a year ago, stands outside the tunnel, his voice heavy with desperation. “I can’t bear the thought of losing my only other child,” he said, as anxiety grips the family hailing from a village in Uttar Pradesh.

Manjeet, a 22-year-old worker, had recently joined the site, and the family rushed to the scene upon learning of the collapse, fervently hoping for the workers’ swift rescue. Alongside Chaudhary, Shatrughan Lal, the uncle of Manjeet, joins the vigil, emphasizing the family’s profound concern for the safe return of their youngest member.

Amidst assurances from those within and authorities outside claiming the trapped workers are “fit, fine, and healthy,” doubts shroud the families. Manjeet’s father conveyed their readiness to bring him home, to which the young man responded, “Papa, don’t worry. I am fine here.”

However, with each passing day and no signs of change within the tunnel, families grapple with uncertainty. Shatrughan expresses their sincere hope for the safety of their loved ones but acknowledges the palpable uncertainty looming over their situation.

Maharaj Singh Negi, brother of one of the trapped workers, echoes the sentiment, questioning the actual status of their health and expressing frustration over the lack of progress. “Nothing concrete is happening here, or we wouldn’t have been waiting for our loved ones even after six days,” he lamented.

As the hours tick by, families remain united in their fervent prayers, desperately awaiting news of a successful rescue, hoping that their loved ones emerge unscathed from the confines of the tunnel.
