Demise of Malawi’s Vice President Shatters the Nation
The death of Malawi’s vice president, Saulos Klaus Chilima, was a bolt from the blue. The wrecked plane carried the Vice President and nine others.
After the plane disappeared from the airport radar, it was found in the mountainous region in the northern part of the country in a wrecked condition with no survivors. Hundreds of soldiers, police officers, and forest rangers were searching for the missing military plane that carried Malawi’s Vice President, a former first lady, and eight others.
The plane carrying 51-year-old Saulos Klaus Chilima and former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri went missing on Monday morning after taking off from the nation’s capital, Lilongwe. The plane was supposed to land in the city of Mzuzu. Mr. Chilima was on his way to represent the government at the burial of former government minister Ralph Kasambara.
Mr. Lazarus Chakwera, the president of Malawi, said the air traffic controller informed them not to land in the city of Mzuzu due to bad weather conditions. The air traffic control team asked the plane to turn back to Lilongwe, but due to the bad weather, they lost connection with the plane, and it went off the airport radar, missing.
Nearly 600 personnel were involved in finding the missing military plane. These personnel included around 300 police officers, 200 soldiers, and forest rangers who were mobilized in the Viphya Mountains near Mzuzu for the search operation.
On Tuesday, Mr. Chakwera said the Malawi Defence Force commander informed him that the search and rescue operation had been completed and the plane was found in a wrecked condition. He further added that the news of the plane crash deeply saddened and broke him. Mr. Chakwera and Mr. Chilima belonged to different parties, but they teamed up together and formed an alliance during the 2020 elections for the welfare of the nation. Mr. Chakwera paid tribute to the Vice President, describing him as a good man and a devoted father.
