August 17, 2024: Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has been declared India’s first airport to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emission status, reaching this milestone six years ahead of its 2030 target. The announcement was made by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) on Wednesday, a subsidiary of GMR Airport Infrastructure Limited, under the Airports Council International’s (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program.

IGIA has been certified with Level 5 net-zero emission status, the highest level in the ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, signifying that it has not only reduced its Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 90% but also offset the remaining emissions through approved methods. DIAL, operated by the GMR Group, emphasized that achieving this certification reflects their ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and innovative practices aimed at combating climate change.

DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said, “Reducing carbon emissions from airport operations has been a major focus for us at IGIA. Achieving carbon-neutral status in 2016 and Level 4+ Transition Accreditation in 2020 were only the beginning. By achieving Level 5 net-zero emission accreditation in 2024, we have once again demonstrated our commitment to continuous improvement and green initiatives. As we face the challenges of climate change, we are committed to exploring sustainable aviation fuel options to further reduce our carbon footprint and address Scope 3 emissions. Achieving ACI’s Level 5 certification ahead of our target date is a testament to our dedication to sustainability and innovation.”
