Delhi has been grappling with severe air pollution for the past six days, largely attributed to stubble burning in nearby states like Punjab and Haryana. Despite implementing measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and considering the odd-even restriction on vehicular movement, the situation remained challenging. However, some respite seems to be on the horizon thanks to a western disturbance (WD).

The WD, impacting the Western Himalayan region, has shifted the wind direction in Delhi to a southeasterly direction, increasing wind speed by about 5 kmph. This change has led to a marginal reduction in air pollution levels in the National Capital Region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fresh WD is expected to bring light/moderate rainfall and snowfall over the Western Himalayan Region until November 10.

As the winds shift to the southeast, the impact of stubble fires in Punjab and Haryana on Delhi’s pollution levels should decrease. The conditions are anticipated to further improve after November 11 when the WD moves away, and northwesterly winds, blowing at 15-20 kmph, help disperse pollutants. While these weather conditions offer temporary relief, a more comprehensive, long-term solution to combat air pollution remains crucial.
