Delhi: Chief Minister Atishi remains confident that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will secure another term in power in the capital. In an interview, she discussed her efforts to restore governance following Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest last year, her insights from serving as the Chief Minister over the past four months, and the ongoing state government versus Lieutenant Governor standoff.

“Ten years is undoubtedly a significant period, but a substantial portion of Delhi’s population has experienced transformative changes under the AAP government,” she remarked.

To grasp the popularity of Arvind Kejriwal and AAP, it is essential to understand Delhi’s stark disparities. While certain areas of the city have always had decent infrastructure, unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters were historically neglected. In the past, government budgets were rarely directed toward these areas.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has failed to deliver planned and affordable housing for migrants who move to the city. Being the national capital and a metropolitan hub, Delhi has seen increasing migration over the decades, yet there has been no strategic planning to accommodate these newcomers. Many migrants are forced to live in JJ clusters or unauthorised colonies that previously lacked basic amenities like proper roads, water supply, and sewerage systems. Atishi highlighted that, for years, people in these areas endured appalling living conditions due to the DDA’s inaction. Over the past decade, however, the Kejriwal government has stepped in to address these issues by providing essential infrastructure.

A decade ago, a woman living in a slum spent hours waiting for water tankers. Today, she has access to piped water directly at her doorstep—a change that, Atishi said, will not be forgotten for generations. Similarly, lower-middle-class families who once struggled to afford private education for their children now witness the transformation of Delhi’s public schools. “There was a time when Delhi had ‘tent schools.’ Recently, I asked a Class 8 student about his school, and he proudly said, ‘building-wala school,’ adding, ‘now all schools have buildings.’ This transformation has touched 75% of Delhi,” she explained. Delhi also boasts a reliable 24×7 electricity supply, which, according to Atishi, has significantly improved the lives of even upper-class residents. “Everyone has friends or relatives in Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, or even high-end apartments in Gurugram. They all know that Delhi is the only state offering round-the-clock power supply,” she stated.

Another distinguishing feature of AAP’s legislators, Atishi pointed out, is their accessibility. “Even the upper sections of society appreciate how approachable AAP MLAs are,” she said.
