A 27-year-old woman named Pooja from Malviya Nagar, Delhi, was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a newborn from Safdarjung Hospital after faking a pregnancy for several months to mislead her family. Married for seven years without a child, Pooja had told her family she was expecting and moved in with her parents.
According to police, she had been visiting multiple hospitals to identify potential targets, often by interacting with patients and their families. On April 15, she abducted a day-old baby girl from the hospital’s crèche while no one was around, after befriending the infant’s family.
The police received a complaint around 4 p.m. that day and began tracking the suspect using CCTV footage. Cameras captured a woman with a dupatta partially covering her face, seen on the same floor of the hospital as the infant, engaging in conversations with patients and eventually entering the room where the child went missing.
Further footage tracked her movements across several metro stations, where she tried to mislead investigators by changing trains and routes. Eventually, police traced her to Malviya Nagar using CCTV and auto-rickshaw footage, where she had taken the baby. With help from local informants, police located her residence and recovered the child safely.
During interrogation, Pooja admitted she had staged the entire pregnancy and kidnapped the newborn to maintain the lie, returning home on April 15 with the infant and claiming it was her own.
