New Delhi: In early trends of the Delhi assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has crossed the majority mark in a major political shift, indicating a rejection of Arvind Kejriwal’s model of governance. Kejriwal, Atishi, and Saurabh Bhardwaj, top leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that ruled Delhi for nearly a decade, are trailing in their respective constituencies.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva attributed the trend to people’s support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s model of governance over Kejriwal’s. “This election was a contest between good and bad governance. The situation in Delhi—polluted water, broken roads, poor sanitation, and pollution in the Yamuna—reflects Kejriwal’s failed governance model, which has been rejected by the people,” he said.

Accusing AAP leaders of corruption and betrayal, he said, “Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Atishi—all of them are the faces of corruption. People will not forgive them.”

According to the initial trends released by the Election Commission, BJP is leading on 45 seats, while AAP is leading on 25 seats. The majority figure to form the government in Delhi is 36.

Among the key constituencies, BJP’s Parvesh Verma is leading Kejriwal by 225 votes in the New Delhi assembly seat. AAP minister Saurabh Bharadwaj is trailing BJP’s Shikha Roy by 4,440 votes in Greater Kailash, while Atishi is trailing BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by 2,800 votes in Kalkaji.

Voting for the 70-member Delhi Assembly was held on February 5, in which 60.54 percent of voting took place.
