The Delhi Police has suspended a special staff inspector and initiated an inquiry against two assistant sub-inspectors for allegedly conducting unethical raids and extorting lakhs of rupees from a father-son duo accused of running a fake NCERT books piracy racket.
The case dates back to May 16, when police received a tip about counterfeit NCERT books being sold on Mandoli Road. A raid was conducted, leading to the arrest of the 48-year-old bookseller and his 26-year-old son. Further raids recovered 160,000 books valued at ₹2.4 crore.
However, associates of the accused raised allegations of extortion against the inspector and two ASIs. After a complaint was filed, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara), Prashant Gautam, confirmed the suspension of the inspector and the ongoing departmental inquiry.
An officer revealed that the inspector had allegedly conducted raids without involving the District Investigation Unit (DIU), cherry-picked locations, and hid information from senior officers, indicating malafide intention. The police suspect extortion of lakhs of rupees during these raids.
The matter is being investigated, with the complaint currently with a senior officer at the Delhi Police headquarters.
