Sunday April 28, the Delhi Police registered an FIR in response to a doctored video circulating on social media that misleadingly portrayed Union Home Minister Amit Shah advocating for the elimination of reservation quotas for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The video, which sparked controversy and raised concerns about misinformation, prompted the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to seek legal action against those responsible for its creation and distribution.
The case was registered following complaints from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which claimed that the video had been manipulated to distort Mr. Shah’s remarks made during a political rally. BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya stated that the video had been edited to misrepresent the Home Minister’s comments on reservation quotas for Muslims in Telangana.
“Congress is spreading an edited video that is completely fake and has the potential to cause large-scale violence. Home Minister Amit Shah spoke about removing unconstitutional reservations given to Muslims on the basis of religion. The edited video, however, suggests he was speaking about SCs and STs,” said Malviya. “This misleading content, shared by several Congress spokespersons, has the potential to incite social discord, and they should be prepared for legal consequences.”
The controversy grew as various social media accounts, including those affiliated with the Congress party, shared the doctored video, alleging that it revealed the BJP’s intent to abolish reservation quotas for SCs, STs, and OBCs. These claims were sharply criticised by BJP leaders, who accused the Congress of spreading false information with the potential to incite social unrest.
The Ministry of Home Affairs submitted a detailed report with its complaint, identifying the links and accounts responsible for sharing the manipulated video of Amit Shah. With the FIR now registered, the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) Unit of the Delhi Police Special Cell has initiated an investigation to track down the origins of the fabricated video and take appropriate legal action.
