Delhi Police, on Thursday, busted a gang based in Champaran, Bihar. The gang allegedly called people and extorted money from them in the name of waiving off criminal cases against their families. The investigation found that more than 100 families have been cheated, and an amount of 2.5 crores has been duped from these families.

The gang members would pose as police officers from different states, including Delhi Police, and dupe money out of people. The raid resulted from the complaint lodged by a senior citizen back on October 24th of the last year. The senior citizen, who is a retired bank officer, complained that two men posing as police officers from the crime branch called up and demanded Rs. 2 lakhs for the release of his grandson, who was arrested under the charges of kidnapping.

The gang got busted by the cybercrime unit of North East on Thursday, of which two men have been arrested. They were identified as Mohammad Nasar Ali (24) and Santosh Kumar Yadav (27) – a nautical science graduate who also worked with Bihar police as a technical support staffer.

According to Joy Tirkey, DCP of the North-East, the investigation began when the senior citizen lodged a complaint against the gang. The gang had called him and demanded money for the release of his grandson who was arrested for kidnapping. They also went to lengths as faking a sobbing voice to confirm the incident. The gang initially demanded an amount of 70,000 to be paid of which the man paid 50,000 following which they demanded an additional amount of Rs. 2 lakhs. The man grew suspicious of their actions when he was assured of his grandson’s safety by his parents at home. The man then took the matter to the Delhi Police who have been investigating the case since then.

Tirkey said that the gang would use Whatsapp DP of police officers to call people up and dupe money from them. He added, “During the probe, technical surveillance was mounted where the money was withdrawn in Bihar. The location was identified which resulted in the raid and the arrest of the accused.” The accused was arrested along with his accomplice, and the police confirmed retrieving 15 mobile phones, 28 SIM cards, and 6 ATM cards from the gang.
