July 1: Petrol pumps across Delhi will not provide fuel to end-of-life vehicles (EoL) starting today. The Commission for Air Quality Management has directed the transport department, Delhi Police and traffic personnel to enforce the ban.

Vehicles that have exceeded the lifespan of 10 years for diesel and 15 years for petrol will not be fuelled. To prevent refuelling of such vehicles, one traffic police officer will be stationed at each of the identified petrol pumps.

A detailed deployment plan has been prepared involving personnel from the Transport Department, Delhi Police, Traffic Police and MCD. Traffic police will have the right to seize the vehicles or issue a challan to the owner of EOL vehicle.

Petrol stations are required to maintain a log of denied fuel transactions. And display a signboard stating that fuel will not be dispensed to EoL vehicles. Automated camera systems will capture and display the registration details of vehicles in real-time.

Fuel stations that violate these norms will be reported weekly to the CAQM and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas for further action. Penalties can be imposed on fuel station operators under Section 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

This move is part of the efforts to reduce vehicular pollution in Delhi, following previous bans on old vehicles by the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
