To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Emergency declared on June 25, 1975, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated an exhibition at Central Park in Connaught Place. The event was observed as “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” or Constitution Betrayal Day.
Exhibition Highlights
The exhibition showcased rare and previously unpublished documents, including detention orders of prominent political leaders like former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former Jan Sangh president Balraj Madhok. Official records, press clippings, and photographs from the 21-month Emergency period were also on display. This event was organised by the Delhi government’s Archives Department.
CM Rekha Gupta’s Remarks
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta described the Emergency as the darkest chapter in India’s democratic journey, criticizing the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s government for its cruel and dictatorial actions. “Lakhs were jailed without cause. There was no appeal, no hearing—only fear,” she said, condemning the Congress party for hypocrisy. Gupta emphasized that the present government remains committed to democratic values and pledged that India would never again tolerate authoritarianism.
Government Commitment
Delhi Minister of Art and Culture Kapil Mishra stated that the documents on display provided “clear evidence of the murder of democracy.” He highlighted that many of these documents were being made public for the first time. The exhibition aims to preserve history and remind citizens of the hardships and sacrifices made to save democracy.
Event Attendance
The event was attended by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, several cabinet ministers, and senior officials, underscoring the significance of this anniversary in India’s history.
