The Delhi High Court’s criticism of the Arvind Kejriwal-led government is “well-deserved,” says Ashok Aggarwal, the petitioner who brought the case over the non-supply of textbooks to more than 200,000 students in Delhi’s government schools and those run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), both under the control of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

“The Delhi government deserved to be called out. They advertise that they have world-class institutions, but the reality is quite different. I’ve visited several schools run by the Delhi government and MCD. I saw 140 students or three sections crammed into one classroom. There was no access to water. The same was true in MCD schools,” Aggarwal told ANI. As an advocate, he noted that under the Right To Education (RTE) Act, the Delhi government is obligated to provide basic facilities in MCD-run schools.

“Students are supposed to receive textbooks, notebooks, writing materials, and uniforms, but they haven’t. Notebooks were sent only after the high court reprimand, but books are still pending,” he said.

On Friday, a two-judge bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan, along with Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, sharply rebuked the AAP government, accusing it of “prioritising the political interests of the party over national interest.”

“You (the Delhi government) have placed your interests above those of the students—the children who are studying. This is quite clear, and we are going to make a finding that you have placed your political interests at a higher level. This is arrogance of power at its peak,” the bench observed.

Meanwhile, the AAP has been staging street protests following the arrest of its national convenor, Chief Minister Kejriwal, by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged liquor policy scam. Kejriwal is currently in Tihar jail.
