Delhi High Court requested protection for a 17-year-old rape victim from Delhi Government on Thursday. The minor was allegedly raped multiple times and was impregnated by a Delhi police officer. The government is directed by the court to ensure the safety of both the minor girl and her mother.
The accused Delhi police officer, Premoday Khakha was arrested in August for allegedly raping and impregnating the 17-year-old girl. The girl was living with Khakha and his family in Burari, which her mother believed would help her cope with her father’s demise as she would have Khakha’s two children as companions. However, the house became a living hell for her, as she started repeatedly getting raped between November 2020 and January 2021. It was around February 2021 when the girl claimed that she got pregnant. She confronted Khakha’s wife Rani but she allegedly threatened her, slapped her, and made her take abortion pills, says the minor in her statement.
She informed her mother that she did not enjoy living with Khakha’s family and left his house in April 2021. She did not, however, inform her mother of the sexual assault or the abortion. The devastated young girl soon started having frequent anxiety attacks, many a time in her school. The mother then took her to a city hospital in August for a check-up. She received proper help via counseling following which she revealed her ordeals, alleging Khakha of sexual assault and several others.
Following her complaint, Delhi Police suspended the accused officer with immediate effects. Both the accused and his wife Seema Rani were produced before the court.
Along with asking for the protection of the minor and her mother, the Delhi High Court also directed the Delhi government to formulate a Standard Operating Procedure to be followed in cases involving children within three weeks.
