Delhi Government Pushes for Completion of Asia’s Largest Wastewater Treatment Plant
Delhi Water Minister Atishi recently inspected the upcoming Okhla wastewater treatment plant, deemed Asia’s largest, which is expected to treat 564 MLD sewage daily. Expressing concerns over project delays during her visit, Atishi urged officials to expedite the remaining work to meet the year-end deadline.
This critical project, now in its final phase, aims to redirect sewage from central and south Delhi to the plant, significantly impacting the city’s sewage treatment capacity. Once operational, the plant is poised to notably improve the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) level of polluted water, benefiting the Yamuna’s cleanliness. Treated water from the plant will serve various purposes, including gardening, further enhancing its ecological impact.
Atishi emphasized the project’s significance in preventing millions of liters of sewage from directly entering the Yamuna River daily, highlighting its environmental importance. She underscored the Delhi government’s commitment to prioritizing Yamuna’s rejuvenation, stressing that progress reports should be regularly submitted to ensure project completion within the specified timeline.
Acknowledging the plant’s pivotal role in the city’s water treatment infrastructure, Atishi urged officials to align efforts with the Delhi government’s vision and reiterated their responsibility in achieving the Chief Minister’s directives.
