Delhi Election: More than 1.56 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots from 7 AM across 70 constituencies.
Two employees from the Delhi Chief Minister’s office were detained by the Delhi Police on Tuesday after they were found in possession of ₹5 lakh in cash, just hours before voting began in the 70 assembly constituencies of the national capital.
According to Delhi Police officials, they acted on a tip-off about individuals allegedly carrying cash. A Flying Squad Team (FST) arrived at the scene and apprehended the duo.
“We received information about individuals caught with ₹5 lakh. Our team reached the location, where the FST handed over two men, identified as Gaurav and Ajit. Initial reports suggest both are linked to the Delhi CM’s office. We have seized the cash, and further investigations are underway to determine its source and intended destination. As per our findings so far, one of them works as an assistant to the CM’s PA, while the other is a driver,” said Ravi Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) South East, to ANI.
The DEO/DM South-East confirmed the incident on the social platform X, stating, “The FST team found two individuals, Mr. Gaurav and Mr. Ajit Singh, in a car with ₹5 lakh. Mr. Gaurav claimed the money was received from Mr. Pankaj, PA to Ms. Atishi, for booth management in Giri Nagar, Kalkaji (AC). The cash has been seized, and police are further investigating the matter.”
Meanwhile, over 1.56 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots from 7 AM on Wednesday across 13,766 polling stations in all 70 Assembly constituencies. A total of 699 candidates are contesting in an election that could significantly reshape the political landscape of the capital.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is aiming for a third consecutive term, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making an aggressive push to reclaim Delhi after more than 25 years. The Congress, which governed the city for 15 years until 2013, is striving to make a comeback after failing to win a single seat in the last two elections.
