The Delhi Declaration was adopted at the G20 conference on Saturday while India held the presidency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the member states have reached a consensus. Prime Minister Modi, who chaired the G20 session, saluted the ministers and Sherpas who worked for consensus. The G20 summit will take place in the nation’s capital on September 9 and 10 and will be attended by the leaders of states of the major economies of the globe.

What is the Delhi Declaration?

With complete agreement on all geopolitical and developmental problems, the New Delhi Declaration was adopted as a historic and ground-breaking document. Given the context of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, the mention of geopolitics is particularly significant. The declaration expressed grave concern about the tremendous suffering caused by war and strife around the world. A fresh text to describe the war in Ukraine was distributed to the G20 nations by India hours before the announcement of the consensus on the declaration and the subsequent acceptance of it.

Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), a global initiative to protect the earth from the catastrophic effects of climate change, was also included in the proclamation. The Indian Prime Minister is asked to urgently step up efforts to address the issues of development and climate change, to advance LiFE (Lifestyles for Sustainable Development), and to protect biodiversity, forests, and oceans.

PM Modi about the Delhi Declaration

Speaking to the second session of the summit, the prime minister remarked, “Have just got the good news that due to the hard work of our teams and your cooperation, reached a consensus on the declaration of the G20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi.”

Prime Minister Modi delivered a speech at Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan. Amitabh Kant, the G20 Sherpa for India, claimed in a post on X (previously Twitter) that the Delhi Declaration was groundbreaking and historic and that there was complete agreement on all geopolitical and development-related matters.

Key Highlights of the Delhi Declaration

The agreement stipulates that all governments must refrain from threatening or using force to seize territory at the expense of another state’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, or political independence.

One of the biggest risks to global peace and security, according to the declaration, is terrorism. Regardless of the reason, the location, the time, or the perpetrator, all acts of terrorism are illegal and unacceptable.

The paper places a strong emphasis on defending the weak by encouraging equitable growth and boosting macroeconomic and financial stability.

The proclamation emphasizes a green development pact, accelerated progress toward sustainable development goals, and revitalizing multilateralism.

The G20 member nations committed to encouraging unrestricted, open, and fair trade in the areas of agriculture, food, and fertilizers, as well as a pledge to refrain from enacting export restrictions, according to the New Delhi Leaders Declaration.

The G-20 nations concur to continue working toward improving the global health infrastructure. In cooperation with multilateral development banks (MDBs), countries will strengthen the resilience of health systems and assist the development of climate-resilient and low-carbon health systems. The New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration placed a strong emphasis on the requirement of coordinating financial flows with climatic goals while enhancing funding, strengthening capacity, and technology transfer with an emphasis on the needs and priorities of poor nations.
