Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) received 6.30 lakh calls on the 181 toll-free helpline numbers from July 2022 to July 2023 and has received over 40 lakh calls in the last seven years. Swati Mailwal, Head of DCW, shared insights into the diverse nature of these calls, encompassing issues such as domestic violence, rape cases, neighborhood conflicts, sexual assault, and cybercrime.
Established in 1992 under the National Commission for Women Act of 1990, DCW’s principal mission revolves around protecting women’s rights and offering vital legal aid across various circumstances. The government-endorsed 24/7 hotline has been pivotal in extending this much-needed assistance to women in distress.
In statistical terms, 38 thousand domestic violence cases were registered, topping the chart. Over the past years, the highest number of rape cases have been registered in Burari. Most of the POCSO cases are seen in the Narela region. The majority of domestic violence cases were reported from the Kalyanpuri area. The highest number of cases was received in July 2022, and the least in January 2023. Regarding weekly trends, most calls are received on Mondays, and the least on Sundays. The average call timings are mostly between 12 pm and 5 pm. In terms of age, most calls are made by women aged between 21 and 31, and there are also calls received from women above their 50s. An appreciable aspect is that transgender individuals are also opening up about their issues and calling the hotline.
Analytical data divulges that the foremost concern lies in domestic violence cases, reaching a substantial count of 38,000 registered cases. Over the past years, Burari has emerged as the epicenter for reported rape cases, while Narela has witnessed a significant number of POCSO cases. Remarkably, the Kalyanpuri region recorded the highest incidence of domestic violence cases.
The highest number of cases was received in July 2022, and the least in January 2023. On a weekly basis, Mondays emerged as the peak day for calls, whereas Sundays depicted the least activity. In terms of age, most calls are made by women aged between 21 and 31, although the hotline also received calls from women above 50. Encouragingly, the hotline has provided a platform for transgender individuals to articulate their concerns.
In response to the disconcerting escalation in cases of rape and violence against women, the DCW’s Chief Swati Mailwal has urged the central government to convene a meeting and implement decisive measures to address this issue. Speaking further about the DCW’s operations, she mentioned that the organization is supported by a proper team and provides all necessary requirements such as hospital services, medical aid, education, etc. If necessary, a team of police is dispatched to the location.
