Dark Comedies: The Less Explored Genre in Bollywood
Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao have reestablished their working relationship and are bringing a hilarious dark comedy about missing brides. Aamir and Kiran have already collaborated on numerous projects. However, Kiran took on the role of director for the Prateik Babbar and Monica Dogra-starring film “Dhobi Ghat,” and Aamir provided financial support for it through his production company, Aamir Khan Productions. The actor also had a significant part in the critically acclaimed film “Dhobi Ghat,” despite its bizarre plot and disastrous box office performance. “Laapataa Ladies,” a dark comedy, has released its teaser.
From the 1983 film “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” with Naseeruddin Shah to the 2017 film “An Action Hero” with Ayushmann Khurrana, Bollywood has produced some truly great dark comedies over the years. The majority of these films were blockbusters and those that weren’t as successful at the box office over time developed cult followings. These flicks all share one thing in common, though: they’re all quite amusing!
Dark comedy is a difficult genre to get into and has mostly been avoided by the Indian public and media. Additionally, the films that some directors did take the initiative to make rarely ended up being significant.
While we’re talking about dark comedy, it would be a mistake to ignore Bollywood’s initial plunge into gallows humor, “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.” The film, directed by Kundan Shah, which was far ahead of its time, offered viewers a glimpse into the rampant corruption in Indian politics, government institutions, the news media, and business. Because of its scathing and sardonic depiction of the limits of morality and ethics, the movie is regarded as a cult classic.
“Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” received the recognition it deserved years after being released, and other recent dark comedies may follow suit. The moment has come for Indian viewers and artists to express a strong interest in this genre, which has a ton of untapped potential.
The rise of OTT channels makes it probable that films in this category will broaden Bollywood’s horizons. The audience is eager to experience diversity, and on mobile screens, box office disappointments will get a second chance.
