Cyril Ramaphosa, 71, was re-elected as the president of South Africa on Friday, June 14. Mr. Ramaphosa’s battle to regain power was not easy, as the African National Congress (ANC) had to strike a last-minute deal to form a coalition government with its most prominent foe, the Democratic Alliance (DA).

The Democratic Alliance, the biggest opposition party to the ANC, has set aside its historic rivalry and agreed to form a coalition government with the ANC, calling it a government of national unity.

Mr. Ramaphosa, the president of the ANC, won an overwhelming vote in parliament against Julius Malema of the far-right Economic Freedom Fighters, who was also nominated. Mr. Ramaphosa swept up 283 votes, while Mr. Malema received just 44 votes in the 400-member parliament.

The 2024 election marked a historic defeat for the longstanding dominance of the ANC, the party that dismantled the apartheid system in the country. The ANC, the famed party of Nelson Mandela, won just 40 percent of the vote for the first time since it gained power in the 1994 election. The ANC’s vote share has collapsed from 57.5 percent in 2019 to 40.2 percent in the 2024 elections.

The reasons behind the ANC losing its popularity include rampant corruption, high levels of unemployment, and a lack of sanitation and security in the country. This is a golden chance for the DA, a pro-white party, which has received 22 percent of the votes, to work for the welfare of the nation. The DA will co-govern the country with the ANC.
