The West Bengal government has kicked into high gear as a severe cyclonic storm named Remal brews over the Bay of Bengal. The cyclone is expected to make landfall around midnight on Sunday near the India-Bangladesh border region, passing between the Sagar Islands and Khepupara.
Authorities have established a 24/7 control room at the state secretariat in Kolkata to coordinate emergency response efforts. The control room will work closely with police, disaster management teams, municipal bodies, and forces like NDRF, SDRF, Coast Guard, and Civil Defence. Residents can reach the control room by calling 1070 or 033 22143526 for information or assistance.
The cyclone is currently packing maximum sustained wind speeds of 90-100 kmph, with gusts up to 110 kmph, as per the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather office has warned of potential flooding, structural damage, disruption of power, communication, and transport links, and destruction of crops and orchards in the coastal districts of South and North 24 Parganas.
Bracing for Remal’s impact, the Kolkata airport has suspended all flight operations for a 21-hour period starting Saturday night until 9 am Monday. This has resulted in the cancellation of 349 scheduled flights, leaving many passengers stranded and having to take temporary shelter at the airport premises. Railway authorities have also suspended some train services originating from Howrah and Bandel until midnight on Sunday.
The IMD has advised the public in affected areas to remain prepared as adverse weather conditions are likely from May 26 through May 28. The cyclone alert remains in effect until further notice as Remal continues its northward movement after being located around 240 km south-southeast of Sagar Islands in the latest update.
