Cyclonic Storm Midhili is making its presence felt as it crosses the Bangladesh coast, bringing with it heavy rainfall and a storm surge of up to 2 meters. Presently situated over the Northeast Bay of Bengal near the coast of Bangladesh, the storm is packing winds of 60-70 kmph, gusting to 80 kmph.

In response to escalating weather conditions, government authorities in several northeastern states issued alerts as a deep depression transformed into Cyclonic Storm Midhili. The impact was evident on the initial day of Meghalaya’s Cherry Blossom Festival, with adverse weather disrupting festivities. Mizoram, Tripura, and Assam experienced varying levels of rainfall, causing concerns.

According to ANI, Cyclone Midhili is expected to follow a north-northeastward trajectory, making landfall near Khepupara, Bangladesh, with winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kmph and gusts up to 80 kmph on the evening and night of November 17, 2023.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported, “Deep Depression (remnant of Cyclonic Storm Midhili) over Tripura & adjoining Bangladesh weakened into a Depression… To weaken into a Well-Marked Low over south Assam & adjoining Mizoram-Tripura during the next 06 hours.”

As the storm heads towards Bangladesh, a storm surge of up to 2 meters in height is anticipated, prompting strong advisories for fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to evacuate to higher ground for safety.

The IMD forecasts Cyclone Midhili to cross the Bangladesh coast near Khepupara with a maximum wind speed of 80 kmph on Friday night or early Saturday morning.

In the affected regions, the IMD predicts substantial rainfall, with Aizawl district in Mizoram expected to receive 51 mm between November 17 and 18. Other districts in Mizoram and neighboring areas are also likely to experience heavy rainfall.

Tripura has issued a red alert in four districts due to moderate rainfall caused by the cyclonic storm. The name “Midhili” has been assigned by the Maldives.

The Purba Medinipur district administration in West Bengal issued a warning regarding the imminent arrival of Cyclone Midhili. In West Bengal’s state capital, Agartala, substantial rainfall of 87 mm has been recorded since Thursday evening. Various locations in Assam, including Guwahati, have also witnessed a combination of rainfall and brisk winds since Friday morning.

The cyclonic storm is projected to traverse the Sundarbans before reaching the Bangladesh coast, with the IMD forecasting a maximum wind speed of 80 kmph during Friday night or the early hours of Saturday morning. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
