A red alert has been declared due to heavy to extremely heavy rainfall expected in various regions of Tamil Nadu, southern Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and interior Karnataka.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for parts of Tamil Nadu as Cyclonic Storm ‘Fengal’ over the Bay of Bengal is expected to make landfall near Puducherry on Saturday afternoon, November 30, with wind speeds of up to 90 km/h. The region is forecast to experience heavy rainfall, high tides, and strong winds.

Ananda Das, head of IMD’s Cyclonic Division, stated that the alert has been issued due to the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, southern Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and interior Karnataka.

Dr. S. Balachandran, director of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, highlighted that coastal districts, especially between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry, will be significantly affected. “Wind speeds have reached 50-60 km/h, with gusts up to 70 km/h. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected between 1 pm and 2 pm, with scattered heavy to very heavy showers in several areas,” he said.

In response, schools and colleges in Puducherry and several Tamil Nadu districts, including Kanchipuram, will remain closed on Saturday.

The Puducherry Fisheries Department has also issued an advisory warning fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea. They have been advised to move boats and equipment to higher ground to prevent damage as Cyclone Fengal approaches.
