The ongoing conflict in Gaza has taken a devastating toll on the Palestinian population, with hospitals in the region facing an unprecedented crisis. As violence continues to escalate, many hospitals and medical facilities have become overcrowded, leading to concerns about hygiene, disease outbreaks, and the availability of essential healthcare services.

The conflict, which began in early October, has resulted in a dire humanitarian situation, leaving over a million people out of Gaza’s 2 million population homeless, according to UN estimates. While some have been accommodated in shelters run by humanitarian organizations, many have had to take refuge wherever they can find it. Tens of thousands of families have sought refuge in hospitals, hoping for safety amidst the brutal counterstrikes.

One such facility, Al Ahli Arab Hospital in central Gaza, was tragically bombed, leading to a significant loss of life. The strike on the hospital, which took place at night, has led to accusations and counter-claims. Gaza officials reported that at least 500 people were killed in the attack. While local Hamas leadership blamed Israel for the strike, Tel Aviv claimed that a rocket misfired by Islamic Jihad Palestinian militants hit the health facility.

Tragically, the bombing of Al Ahli Arab Hospital is not an isolated incident. As of the time the conflict began on October 7, at least 111 healthcare facilities or vehicles have been targeted, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The impact has been devastating, with 12 health workers losing their lives, and 24 health facilities, including six hospitals, suffering damage. In the WHO’s report, it is noted that three hospitals have sustained such heavy damage that they are no longer operational.

The ongoing power blackout in Gaza, resulting from Israel’s cutoff of electricity, has further strained the situation. Officials in Gaza have been forced to direct fuel from other public facilities to hospitals to prevent a complete shutdown. Additionally, people have been asked to donate fuel reserved for domestic use to keep hospitals running. However, the supply of medicines is running critically low, putting the lives of thousands at risk, particularly pregnant women facing challenges in accessing prenatal and maternity care.

The mass influx of people seeking refuge in hospitals has raised significant concerns about disease outbreaks and a hygiene crisis. Overcrowding and poor water and sanitation conditions among people already in dire straits increase the risk of infection and health crises. Families who have sought shelter in hospitals are facing difficult conditions, with limited access to personal hygiene.

Despite these challenges, the people of Gaza have exhibited remarkable resilience, with some enduring days without access to showers and basic sanitation facilities. The situation has become untenable, with patients, including those in critical condition, competing for space and resources within these medical facilities.

The situation in Gaza is dire, with the World Health Organization sounding the alarm. Hospitals are at a breaking point, overflowing with patients, and there is an urgent need to address the mounting healthcare crisis. The WHO has stated that moving more patients into already overcrowded hospitals due to the evacuation order from Israel is “tantamount to a death sentence.”

The health body has called for an immediate end to hostilities and the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to ensure the delivery of essential health supplies to hospitals. Additionally, the WHO has expressed concerns about funding shortages affecting access to basic healthcare services, emphasizing that without adequate funding, thousands will lose access to essential medical care.

As the crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, there is an urgent need for international support to address the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the region. The situation underscores the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of innocent civilians, ensuring that they have access to essential healthcare, and finding a path to a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
