In a significant move, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has formally included cricket as a sport in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This decision coincides with the ongoing ICC Men’s World Cup in India, drawing massive global attention to the sport. The inclusion of cricket in the Olympics underscores its soaring popularity, a momentum that was also acknowledged with its inclusion in the Asian Games 2023 in China.

The IOC’s official approval of cricket’s presence in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics marks the reintroduction of this global sport into the Olympic Games program, the last appearance of which was in 1900.

Cricket joins the ranks of five new sports sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during its 141st session, alongside squash, baseball/softball, lacrosse, and flag football. This announcement, made by IOC President Thomas Bach, received opposition from only two of the 99 IOC members.

Niccolo Campriani, the Sports Director at LA28, highlighted the worldwide appeal of cricket, emphasizing the popularity of India’s cricketing icon, Virat Kohli. He stated, “We are thrilled to embrace the world’s second most popular sport, boasting an estimated 2.5 billion fans globally. Some may wonder why it’s being introduced in Los Angeles. The commitment to expanding cricket in the US is tangible, as demonstrated by the successful launch of Major League Cricket this year, which surpassed expectations.”
