Suicide is a profound global public health concern, casting a long shadow of social, emotional, and economic repercussions. With more than 700,000 suicides occurring annually worldwide, the impact ripples far and wide, touching countless lives.

The triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day, spanning from 2021 to 2023, is “Creating Hope Through Action.” This theme serves as a compelling call to arms, reminding us that alternatives to suicide exist, and that through our collective actions, we can ignite hope and fortify prevention.

By actively creating hope, we send a powerful message to those grappling with suicidal thoughts–a message that there is hope, that we genuinely care, and that support is available. It underscores that our actions, no matter their scale, can offer a lifeline to those in need.

Moreover, it underscores the critical importance of suicide prevention as a public health priority. Urgent action is needed to curb suicide rates, and the World Health Organization (WHO) remains steadfast in its commitment to working alongside partners to help nations implement concrete measures toward this end.

Established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in collaboration with WHO, World Suicide Prevention Day, observed on 10 September each year, aims to spotlight this issue, dismantle stigma, and raise awareness among governments, organizations, and the public. It conveys a singular message: suicides are preventable.

Together, through collective action, compassion, and understanding, we can create a world where hope triumphs over despair, and lives are preserved.
