In a startling turn of events, Israeli undercover agents, some disguised as medical staff, conducted a raid on Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin, resulting in the tragic shooting deaths of three Palestinian militants. This incident, the first of its kind in eight years, has stirred controversy and condemnation.
The Palestinian health ministry strongly condemned the operation, highlighting the violation of international law protecting healthcare facilities. The Israeli military defended the raid, asserting that they were targeting a “Hamas terrorist cell” within the hospital premises.
Hospital director Naji Nazzal described the incursion, revealing that Israeli forces entered covertly and carried out targeted assassinations using silenced weapons. The victims were identified as Muhammad Jalamnah, Muhammad Ayman Ghazawi, and Basel Ayman Ghazawi. The Israeli army accused them of seeking refuge in the hospital while being involved in terrorist activities.
Closed-circuit television footage shared by the Palestinian ministry depicted armed individuals in medical uniforms or civilian clothes, utilizing props like a baby carrier and a wheelchair. The footage adds a layer of complexity to an already contentious situation.
The Ghazawi brothers were affiliated with the Islamic Jihad militant group, while Jalamnah held a position as a “commander” in the armed wing of Hamas. The Israeli army claimed Jalamnah was involved in significant terrorist activities and was inspired by recent Hamas attacks.
While incidents of deadly raids within hospitals are infrequent, this event draws parallels with a similar occurrence in 2015. The Israeli army defended their actions, stating that Jalamnah had planned a terror attack and had been using the hospital as a hiding place.
Since the October 7 clashes that ignited tensions between Israel and Hamas, over 370 people have lost their lives in the West Bank, according to reports from the health ministry in Ramallah. The ongoing military operations and escalating tensions continue to cast a shadow over the region.
