Couple Drove Cop on Car’s Bonnet: Arrested for Attempt to Murder
A case for attempt to murder has been filed against an unidentified couple who were approached by a cop for making out in the car’s backseat in a west Bengaluru residential area. The couple are accused of trying to run down an off-duty policeman after he caught them in the act.
On January 20, Mahesh K, a reserve sub-inspector within the Bengaluru police’s Central Armed Reserve Unit, was driven for about 500 m on the car’s bonnet before the driver slammed the brake causing the policeman to fall off the car. The incident was captured by a few CCTV cameras in the region.
The incident was registered with the Jnanabharathi police the following day on the basis of the 33-year-old policeman’s statement, who is undergoing treatment in a hospital. According to Mahesh, he returned to his home in Upakar Layout for lunch and ventured around at 3:30 pm for a walk. He saw a white KIA Seltos car near his home in which he said a boy and girl were making out in the backseat.
Mahesh added in his statement that he was trying to note down the car’s number when the vehicle suddenly stormed towards him causing him to jump on its bonnet. The car went into reverse gear for a short distance and the driver abruptly applied the brake, leading the policeman to fall. The police officer is said to have received a bump on his head and bruises on his body and was briefly unconscious after the fall.
“The car was driven for nearly 500 m with me on the bonnet and the brakes were applied suddenly with the intention to kill me. The boy who was driving the car and the girl in the backseat drove away without providing any first-aid, “Mahesh added in his statement.
The police are investigating the incident using the available CCTV footage from the residential layout to track down the car and the couple.
