Countdown to Democracy: Unveiling the Stakes and Stories Behind the 2024 Elections

2024 is here, and so are the ballots. The futures of more than 70 countries, almost 4.2 billion people, are to be decided through elections scheduled this year. The adult populations in the world’s top powers like India, Britain, Russia, and the U.S.A. are all set to have their say. The European Parliament will also go to vote, and countries will elect their representatives. What will be at stake here? Things that are relevant. The foreign policy and international stances, which, to say the least, will be shaped by the kinds of governments and leaders that (mostly) people choose. The continent where the maximum number of elections is scheduled is Africa, where people have somehow developed a taste for military-ruled trenchocracies.
Recent trends, elections, and approval ratings have shown that citizens prefer strong, ideologically conservative, and right-wing governments. Giorgia Meloni, who has been associated with neo-fascist groups (and has a positive view of Mussolini as a politician), came to power in Italy. Javier Milei, a proud libertarian who is not shy at all in voicing his critique for the “Leftists” and “Peronists,” took his oath of office as the President of Argentina just three weeks ago. Geert Wilders is all set to become the Prime Minister and to form a government in the Netherlands after his far-right coalition won more seats than any other political faction.
Seemingly “non-conservatives/conventionalists” have seen their popularity dip, with both Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau expecting a serious challenge in their bid to retain power. There is no need to speculate on the electoral outcomes of polls in the Russian Federation. Even after widespread sanctions through the Ukraine conflict, citizens seem to have unshakeable faith in their incumbent President. His strong will not to let go of Ukraine and his masterful management of sanctions (with support from India and China, especially when it comes to Russian crude oil) are commendable. Therefore, even a layman can very confidently predict that Mr. Vladimir Putin will continue to serve as the President. In Britain, the Whigs (Conservatives) led by Mr. Rishi Sunak have regained lost momentum and look ever ready to put up a fight to defend their seat against the Tories (Labour) and their charge headed by Sir Keir Starmer. The lack of a serious opposition in the Indian political sphere has all but set the stage for Mr. Modi to come back as the Prime Minister in what will be a third consecutive term.
The nullification of Donald Trump’s candidature, first in Colorado and then in Maine, has mobilized support for him. The last U.S. Presidential candidate ever to be banned from the ballot was Abraham Lincoln, and what happened then—a civil war broke out. Vivek G. Ramaswamy is emerging as the ‘dark horse’ in the Republican party’s presidential race; his sudden rise and political acumen have drawn appreciation from Mr. Trump himself. He is widely being thought of as Trump’s Vice-President and even his successor (should he get nominated and win elections). We can all play these games of predictions, speculations, and accusations; what’s important, however, is to make sure that citizens are allowed to exercise their freedom of choice without any fear and to hope for the calming down of tensions in the global geopolitical arena.
With these ideals in mind, we welcome 2024 and whatever it brings along.
