The Delhi Police has arrested four men, including a civil contractor, for stealing 70 grams of gold and 20 grams of silver articles worth ₹7 lakh. The valuables belonged to a Lajpat Nagar resident who had unknowingly handed them over to the contractor, along with an old almirah, to be sold to a scrap dealer.
According to the police, the contractor, Mantu Mandal, 42, had been entrusted with the almirah by Jitender Singh. However, when the scrap dealer discovered the gold and silver items inside the almirah, Mandal decided to keep them for himself. With the help of his accomplices—Raj Kumar, Sarfaraz Gaffar, and Mohammad Yusuf alias Raju—Mandal concocted a story of abduction to cover up the theft.
The police became suspicious when Mandal reported the alleged abduction almost a day after it had supposedly occurred. An investigation, including CCTV footage and technical analysis, revealed the truth, and the four men were arrested. The police recovered the stolen valuables, and further investigation is underway.
The case highlights the importance of verifying the authenticity of claims and the use of technology in solving crimes. The police have registered a case and are taking action against the accused.
