In a bid to signal a message of change and set the stage for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Indian National Congress is gearing up for a mega rally in Nagpur. The event, themed ‘Hain Tayyar Hum’ (we are ready), is scheduled to feature prominent leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
The choice of Nagpur holds strategic significance as it is home to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) headquarters and ‘Deekshabhoomi,’ the historic site where Dr B R Ambedkar embraced Buddhism. Party leaders anticipate that the rally, expected to draw in lakhs of people and Congress supporters, will send a resounding message across the nation.
Congress MLA from Nagpur, Nitin Raut, emphasized the importance of the rally in signaling a shift in the political landscape. “The Congress will sound the bugle for the Lok Sabha polls due next year,” Raut told PTI. He added that the Congress sees its role as safeguarding the country’s democratic system, Constitution, and all four pillars of democracy, which, according to him, are currently under threat.
Addressing the media, Congress leader Nana Patole accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misusing government agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate, Central Bureau of Investigation, and Income Tax Department to stifle opposition voices. Patole claimed that the BJP’s actions are undemocratic and that the Congress is committed to bringing about a change in the current political scenario.
“The battle of the Congress is to save the country which is going through a difficult situation, and the Congress guarantees that it will save the nation,” Patole asserted. He also criticized the government for its handling of issues such as inflation, farmer distress, and youth unemployment.
The rally, scheduled on the foundation day of the Congress, is expected to draw attention to what the party perceives as the tyrannical and arrogant nature of the current government. Party leaders express confidence that the public will rally behind the Congress’s message of change and that the event will mark the beginning of a spirited campaign leading up to the next Lok Sabha elections.
In the lead-up to the rally, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will hold a meeting with party general secretaries and other senior leaders. The Congress appears poised to use the occasion to articulate its vision for a different political future and mobilize support against the BJP-led government at the Centre.
