The silence from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal regarding the Swati Maliwal assault case has stirred discontent within the ally Congress. Despite the coalition’s protocol of restraint, there are internal calls for more decisive action.

According to high-ranking sources in the Congress, there have been discussions with AAP leadership, urging them to take proactive steps to prevent the BJP from capitalizing on the situation before the May 25th elections. They stressed the importance of controlling the narrative to avoid any perception of bias against Maliwal.

However, Congress is also dissatisfied with the response from AAP. Atishi’s press conference was perceived as detrimental, potentially painting AAP in an unfavorable light regarding women’s issues. The dilemma for Congress is intricate; while it must maintain decorum within the alliance, it is also troubled by its own history of similar allegations.

Even Radhika Khera, who recently defected to the BJP, accused Congress leadership of remaining silent on harassment complaints. Congress spokespersons have been advised to exercise restraint on the Maliwal issue, echoing Priyanka Vadra’s stance of awaiting facts while affirming support for women.

Deepak Babaria, Congress’s point person for Delhi and Haryana, expressed solidarity with the victim but refrained from deep involvement, citing it as an internal matter of AAP. The Congress is concerned about AAP’s social media attacks on Maliwal, fearing potential repercussions, particularly if Maliwal aligns with the BJP.

Therefore, while keeping an eye on Maliwal’s actions, Congress opts for a cautious approach, wary of tarnishing her image ahead of the polls.
