The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Monday that 6.9 million people have fled the Democratic Republic of Congo at a record high due to rising violence, mainly in the east of the country due to conflict. One of the greatest human disasters in history is partly due to years of guerrilla warfare and frequent natural disasters.

Based on data compiled by the United Nations, the majority of those forced from their homes live in the eastern provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri, and Tanganyika. According to the IOM, more than one million people have been displaced in North Kivu alone due to ongoing violence between the Tutsi-led M23 rebel group. “The Congolese people have been facing a storm of disasters for decades.”

According to Fabian Sambassi, IOM Head of Mission in Congo, “The recent escalation of conflict has displaced more people in a shorter period of time than ever before.” While IOM said it had set up 3,347 emergency shelters and provided 7,715 supplies of essential non-food items since June, it warned that its operations remain underfunded.
