West Bengal leader Mamata Banerjee stirred controversy on Wednesday with a warning to the BJP during a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad event.
A complaint has been lodged with the Delhi Police against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by Vineet Jindal, a Supreme Court lawyer, over remarks she made on Wednesday that are alleged to be provocative and intended to incite unrest. The complaint focuses on Banerjee’s statement during a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad event, where she reportedly warned, “Remember, if Bengal burns, then Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn.” Jindal argued that her comments were inflammatory, potentially inciting regional hatred and enmity, which could threaten national harmony and public order.
He emphasized that, as Chief Minister, Banerjee’s words carry significant influence, making the remarks particularly dangerous. Citing the provocative nature of her statement, which he believes was intended to create disharmony and fuel hatred among the people of India, Jindal requested that an FIR be filed against Banerjee under Sections 152, 192, 196, and 353 of the BNS, noting that these are serious, cognizable offenses.
On Wednesday, Banerjee condemned the BJP’s 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh,’ accusing the party of attempting to “defame” Bengal and alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was using his party to incite unrest in the state. She also referenced the student-led uprising in Bangladesh that led to the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, stating, “Modi babu, you are trying to create unrest in Bengal through your people. But remember, if you burn Bengal, Assam, the North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn.”
Her comments drew sharp criticism, including from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who accused Banerjee of spreading unrest and divisive politics. “Didi, how dare you threaten Assam?” Sarma responded on X, warning her against attempting to ignite unrest with her “politics of failure.” BJP state president and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar also wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, condemning Banerjee’s comments as a “blatant endorsement of revenge politics” and accusing her of making anti-national remarks that could threaten democracy.
