Georgia: After the introduction of the foreign agents bill on May 11, 2024, Georgia has been witnessing demonstrations. The Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Koakhizde, vowed to push ahead after the opposition called for the protests. This is the largest protest that Georgia has witnessed post-independence from the USSR since 1991. Georgia’s opposition has called upon its supporters to stage a massive protest and an all-night rally.

According to the Russian news agency Tass, today it has been reported that Georgian police have been pushing protestors away from the parliament’s entry gate and some minor scuffles have occurred between the police and protestors before the lawmakers’ debate.

The foreign agents bill requires organizations receiving more than 20% of funding from abroad to register or face fines.

The opposition and the West have criticized this bill, comparing it to Vladimir Putin’s 2012 foreign agents bill which he uses to silence his critics.

This bill comes at a very crucial time, when Georgia shares warm relations with the West and the EU. Now the ball lies in the Georgian parliament’s court, whether it wants to push for NATO and EU membership by stopping the introduction of such a bill or build strong ties with Russia by passing the bill.
