Chinese President Xi Jinping Expected to Miss G20 Summit in India
According to individuals with expertise in the current circumstances in both India and China, Chinese President Xi Jinping appears to be reluctant to attend the upcoming G20 conference in India next week. Instead, Premier Li Qiang will represent Beijing at the summit, scheduled for September 9-10 in New Delhi. It’s important to note that neither the Indian nor Chinese foreign ministries have issued official statements on the issue when asked.
The upcoming summit in India had been seen as a potential opportunity for Chinese President Xi Jinping to meet with US President Joe Biden, who has confirmed his presence. This summit was expected to be used by the two superpowers to focus on repairing their ties, which had been strained by various commercial and geopolitical problems.
Xi’s last encounter with Biden occurred during the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, in November of the previous year.
On a similar issue, Russian President Vladimir Putin has already conveyed his decision that he would not attend the summit in New Delhi, instead sending Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in his place.
A high-ranking official in the nation hosting the event, India, told the media that the premier is scheduled to attend the meeting instead of Xi Jinping.
Meanwhile, evidence from two foreign diplomats and a government official from other G20 countries indicates that Xi Jinping will not travel to the conference. These individuals, two of whom claim to have obtained this information from Chinese authorities, do not know the particular reasons for Xi’s anticipated absence.
Several of the government officials named in the research spoke confidentially because they were not permitted to make public remarks.
The prospect of an encounter between Xi Jinping and Joe Biden has been heightened by a succession of trips to Beijing by key US officials in the past few months. This involves Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s latest trip.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Presidents Conference, set for November 12-18 in San Francisco, has also been mentioned as a prospective site for direct conversations between the two Presidents.
After China relaxed rigorous pandemic-related border restrictions early this year, Xi Jinping, who won an extraordinary third term as China’s leader in October of the previous year, has curtailed his worldwide travel. However, he did manage to attend a conference last week in South Africa with the Leader of the BRICS group of fast-rising nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).
It is important to note that previous G20 Ministerial talks conducted in India before the summit experienced disputes, particularly from Russia and China, which collectively rejected declarations containing sections opposing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.
At the BRICS conference in Johannesburg, Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a fascinating discussion. They discussed methods to reduce difficulties regarding their diplomatic connection, which had worsened amid clashes near their Himalayan border in 2020, resulting in the deaths of 24 soldiers.
