The Chinese President Xi Jinping upgraded ties with a record number of countries last as he seeks to rally the Global South to reshape the US led world war.

Beijing elevated the way it describes ties with 17 countries and territories last year, most of them were from the developing world, according to a Bloomberg analysis of statements issued by the foreign ministry.

While, Washington has built a diplomacy strategy dependent on coalitions of mostly rich allies, Beijing is doing the opposite, wooing developing countries that make up most of the world’s population using aid, trade, and investments.

The geopolitical benefits are in display this week with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s first state visit to China, breaking convention with previous Maldivian leaders and handling Xi a victory over the regional rival India.

“With the deepening of its strategic competition with the US, China is increasingly eager to solidify its partnership base with more countries,” said Yun Sun, director of the China Program at Stimson Center. This is especially for nations that depend on China economically or have similar world views.

Xi met Muizzu on Wednesday and vowed to bring China – Maldives relations to a new level the leaders upgraded their partnership, joining the other countries that elevated ties with Beijing last year, including neighboring countries like Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan, Zambia, and Ethiopia in Africa, as well as in Venezuela, Uruguay, and Colombia in Latin America.
The two governments agreed upon drawing up an “action plan” for building a “China – Maldives Comprehensive Strategic Partnership from 2024 to 2028.” The decisions assume a greater significance, a month after Muizzu government decided to skip India – led Colombo Security Conclave’s NSA – level meet, held in Mauritius in December, while signaling a clear shift in Male from the predecessor Solih government’s strategic policy of close defense and security cooperation with India and the US.

President Muizzu’s visit is a coincidence with a diplomatic row between India and Maldives, after its three junior ministers in the Maldives posted controversial remarks regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to his recent trip to Lakshadweep the social media posts sparked a fire from Mr. Modi’s supporters in India, who launched a campaign “Boycott Maldives”.

Meanwhile, the Maldivian President made a significant pitch for the country’s tourism industry in his ongoing visit, urging Chinese tourists to reclaim their top spot in arrivals, effectively replacing Indian tourists holding the position for the last two years.
