China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to contributing to the reconciliation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In a recent phone call with his Israeli counterpart, Eli Cohen, Wang Yi expressed China’s firm support for any resolution that promotes peace, characterizing the ongoing conflict as a critical juncture between war and peace.

Wang Yi emphasized the need for Israel to take effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in the Middle East. He underscored that all countries have the right to self-defence but stressed the importance of abiding by international humanitarian law to protect civilian lives.

In a separate conversation with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki, Wang Yi conveyed his deep sympathy for the people of Gaza, highlighting their need for security and efforts to promote peace over weapons and geopolitical calculations.

China has consistently condemned violence and attacks on civilians in the conflict. While expressing concerns about Israel’s actions, Wang Yi refrained from explicitly naming Hamas in his comments, demonstrating China’s approach to addressing the broader issues of the conflict.

Furthermore, Wang Yi called for the convening of an authoritative, wide-ranging, and effective international peace conference, signalling China’s commitment to finding a diplomatic resolution to the crisis.

Wang Yi’s statements come as he is set to visit Washington, where discussions on global issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, are expected. The conflict has placed China and Russia on one side and the United States on the other, highlighting the complexities of global geopolitics. China and Russia stress the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people, while the U.S. firmly supports Israel’s right to self-defence.

China has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and clarified that its warships in the Middle East are involved in routine escort missions and friendly visits, not interference in the conflict. The Chinese embassy in the United States has called for an end to “groundless hyping” regarding the deployment of Chinese warships in the region, emphasizing its commitment to peace and stability.
